Just turned 13. Despite my protestations won't pick up anything else (apart from non fiction).

Need some suggestions along the above lines please.

Is he too young for the adult JKR stuff?

Percy Jackson
Jennifer Killick’s stuff - Crater Lake and the follow up and her dread wood series
Gloam by Jack McKay

By adult JKR I can only think of the Casual Vacancy and the Robert Galbraith. You could try him on RG but it sounds like he likes the fantastical side of her writing rather than it being JKR as such?

Terry Pratchett or Phillip Pullman. To be honest I think you’ve missed the boat on Percy Jackson at 13, seems to be wildly popular in my DS’s Y5 class (I did enjoy them enormously as an adult though so maybe I’m wrong!).

Oh and Diana Wynne Jones and Ursula Le Guin might also work!

He read the first two HDM but just won't persevere with the final one, I've no idea why.

I might try Percy Jackson anyway.

Eldest DS really enjoyed them the summer going from y7 to y8 so I think worth a try. Youngest is devouring them now and is in yr5.
The Dark is Rising books are incredible as well and in this sort of vein

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 21/03/2026 11:34

Skandar series by A F Steadman
Shadow Hunters by Cassandra Clare (be aware that, if he does get into them, there are about a gazillion books in the various series)
Divergent series by Veronica Roth
Summoner series by Taran Matharu

CmonBobby · 21/03/2026 11:35

And skullduggery pleasant?

JulietteHasAGun · 21/03/2026 11:41

Garth Nix, the Lireal books?

AlexRidersButt · 21/03/2026 11:46

Charlie Fletcher, Stoneheart trilogy
Derek Landy, Skulduggery Pleasant
Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson or the Egyptian series
Michelle Paver, Wolf Brother series

AlexRidersButt · 21/03/2026 11:46

And definitely Pratchett
