I want to buy a copy of my first ever book. The only word in the book was “look” and I read it in 1990. I’ve looked on Amazon but can’t see anything that looks right
can anyone help me find this book please?

Look! By Jeff Mack?

Oh no. Too late 🤔

Not Spot?

Look! By Jeff Mack?

Sadly not. That was published in 2016 so I couldn’t have read it in 1990

I asked ChatGPT….

Strong candidates

  1. Look Look! — Peter Linenthal
  2. A high-contrast black-and-white board book whose title and text prominently repeat “Look”/“Look!” — made for very young babies. The cover is half black/half white with a sun/moon face and the words LOOK LOOK! in red. This fits a book that uses only the single word as its text.
  3. LOOK! — Jeff Mack
  4. A modern, much-loved picture book that tells a story with very sparse text — in fact it mostly uses just two words: LOOK and OUT. If you remember any other word besides “look” then this might explain it — but it’s not strictly only “look.” (Cover features a gorilla and a boy.)
  5. Look — Fiona Woodcock
  6. This one is recent and playful — but its gimmick is that every word contains “oo” (so it’s not literally the single word “look”). Cover is colorful with balloons and two children. If your memory is of repeated “look” it’s probably not this — but I include it because of the title and visual prominence.
  7. LOOK — Michael Grejniec
  8. A 1990s/1993 era picture book titled LOOK — illustrations and minimal text. I found listings and interior photos from used sellers (so copies show up occasionally on eBay / second-hand sites). If you read it in/around 1990 this is worth checking.

Was it a school reading book?

I think there was another one and the only word in it was Help!.

NuffSaidSam · 08/11/2025 22:27

Try googling 'The Ginn Reading Program' and 'Look'.

NuffSaidSam · 08/11/2025 22:28

Level 1, Book 1 is Look

I remember this being the first ever reading book I read in school, in 1993. It’s not any of the results Google produces sadly, frustrating as I know the exact book you mean!

Beedeeoh · 08/11/2025 22:43

Is it the Reading 360 one? Published by Ginn? There's one published in the 80s.

MelisandeQ · 09/11/2025 00:07

@Beedeeoh the illustrations in it seem to ring a bell with me for sure

CoralPombear · 09/11/2025 00:08

OP I remember this! Did it have a page with a boy looking out of a window? And maybe a clown featured?

Ginn! That’s the one I read!

Is it a Bernstein Bears one? We had one picked up from a jumble sale that might fit the bill.
