English practice book recommendations

Can anybody recommend any books that give a good grounding in English grammar, spelling etc for children. Friends of mine have moved to this country with children aged 9 and 11 and want to do some practice at home. I have suggested Haydn Richards but wondered if similar books exist, something fairly traditional and rigorous but also straightforward.

First Aid in English
First 1000 words in English
Prime-ed - English in Practice series
CGP EAL Workbooks

I have supported EAL students in Primary. The best teachers will be their classmates.
Are they familiar with the Latin alphabet?

I've dipped into First Aid in English for years. First 1000 words is a great vocabulary builder and can be used to develop language too.
The Prime-edd series looks good but I haven't used them, same for CGP but they do good workbooks across the curriculum

Thank you! They are from France and have been learning English so they have some knowledge. They are already in school here and are definitely picking it up quickly, but I think some workbooks would help with a more structured approach to go alongside.
