Dragons trained, unicorns stolen, what next?

DS is nearly 13 and has recently read through the 'How to Train Your Dragon' series. He's currently working through AF Steadman's 'Skandar' series and loving them and has asked me if I can find any more 'person and their magical creature' series.

He's given Anne McCaffrey a go in the past and found them slightly heavy going (although some books in the Pern series are definitely more hard work than others).

Can anyone recommend any series about someone with a magical creature companion?

How about the Earthsea books by Ursula Le Guin? I read those aged 12 & thought they were wonderful.

jonathon stroud books - demons in the bartemaeus series, ghost in the lockwood series.

the demons / ghosts aren't always friendly but some of them get there in the end, and the writing is excellent

Not quite the same, but DD loved both those series and also loved the Amari books by BB Alston. Still magical creatures and things and of all the book series she has gone through its the one I enjoyed reading with her the most.
