Thoughts on a Kindle

OPs please on giving my 14 yr old dd a Kindle for Christmas.

She could do with reading more and watching less online. Some of what she watches is crap, some seems OK. However, she reads very little.

Husband thinks it's would be a waste of money - yet another screen etc. My view is that an e-reader is a very different type of device. Furthermore, it's likely that dd has dyslexia so this could be a more comfortable way to read, which might help.

Would love to hear opinions and experiences. TIA 🙏🏻

Is it a paperwhite type one? If so they are more like 'normal' reading and not like screens in my experience (mine is pretty old!)

Yes, that's what I'm thinking of.

I like having a kindle (paperwhite, not a tablet) as the screen is much nicer to read on than a phone. It's great for taking on trips too as you can store so many books on it. Kindles have a specific font for dyslexia.

DH and I just bought paperwhite signature editions that are pre-owned.they came from Amazon and cost £40 each. Both immaculate and work perfectly. It might be better getting a cheaper used one via Amazon than shelling out for brand new.

I wouldn't count it as "another screen" then as she won't be mindlessly watching something. Go for it! The only thing is it's less sort of colourful and inviting to pick up compared with a book - to me, anyway. But if she is used to picking up a screen it could be great.

Dyslexia font on my kindle was a game changer for me. It makes reading so much easier in a way that I can't even pinpoint. Give it a go what have you got to loose ... possibly some money. Whereas what you might gain is a child that loves reading and that's an amazing gift!
