Books for an almost 9 year old

My eldest niece is 8 and loves books. I am already thinking about Christmas and books I could get her. At Christmas time she will be more than 8 and a half but not 9 till next year. What would others recommend for this age group as books are either under 5-8 or 9-12.

It would be good if you could give us pointers of what her reading level is like. Some that age are tearing through Harry Potter. Others (like my DD) still look for chapter books that are broken up with illustrations, like diary of a wimpy kid.

This:

The Hobbit

Perfect age for it, and a lovely edition.

My granddaughter of the same age has box sets of:
Harry Potter
Diary of a wimpy kid
Horrible histories
Raul Dahl
Pokémon
Jaqueline Wilson
Has just outgrown Horrid Henry and Narnia.

Leonora Bolt: Secret Inventor
Ottoline
Baby Aliens/Broken Leg of Doom etc. by Pamela Butchart
Lottie Brooks (although check you are comfortable with that one)

Thank you all. Plenty of books to start looking at.

Has she tried the Famous Five? My 9 year old has re-read those so many times. At the moment also a lot of Robin Stevens and David Baddiel's books. Plus Walliams but I know they are a bit controversial here!

The Children of Green Knowe series
Narnia series
Both great for Christmas!

Wolves of Willoughby Chase series

Dd is 8.5 and loves Katherine Rundell books, The Explorers, Rooftoppers & Impossible Creatures especially. She also
loves the Roman Mystery books at school and any Hannah Gold books.
