Poetry for 6 year old

6 year old DD is in year 1 and a confident reader (level 9) and has shown a consistent interest in poetry. Any suggestions for some nice, accessible, fun poetry collections she could read herself or we could sit and read together?

The following 2 have both been released quite recently and are fabulous collections, perfect for her age and ability:-

The Shape of Rainbows by Neal Zetter
The Moon's Gorgonzola by Debra Bertulis

The Puffin Book of First Poems is lovely for that age too.

I also love A Whale of a Time (A Funny Poem for Every Day of the Year) but it is an incredibly heavy hardback so maybe one to share together rather than for her to read alone, especially as there's also a real mix of easy and more advanced poems. Still a lovely, modern collection though.

School may have a list of suggested books on their website. This should include poetry.

Please Mrs Butler by Allan Ahlberg is an absolute classic.

Got to be the classic Now We Are Six by AA Milne.
Audio book of Carnival of the Animals by Ogden Nash.

Thanks all. Some lovely suggestions. Particularly excited to hear about the Ahlberg book I absolutely love their work. We do have lots of AA Milne but to be fair they're dog eared copies of mine from about 1987 so probably not the most accessible for her!

Try and find “Poems for the Young” or Poems for the Very Young - Michael Rosen, They are collections of poems. My DDs also read nursery rhymes! Plus Michael Rosen has an A-Z of the best children’s poetry,

‘Poems to Read Aloud’ curated by Julia Donaldson is brilliant for this age.

Hi there!
I recommend the short, rhyming story 'Half of my Heart' by Dilly Quinn! It has beautiful, hand-drawn illustrations that complement the rhyming storyline of a little mouse- perfect for younger children!
I'll attach a link in case you're interested!
