Translated Children’s literature recommendations- European and other classics

DS (5) has recently enjoyed books by European authors translated into English like Tomi Ungerer, Otfried Preussler, Jakob Martin Strid, and Annie M Schmidt. We stumbled across all of these by chance and I’m wondering what else we are missing.

Does anyone have other suggestions for good children’s literature by non UK/US authors which is available in English translation? What are the classics /household names for kids in France, The Netherlands and so on? And not necessarily European authors, further afield too.

Mrs Pepperpot stories or Pippi Longstocking? Or the Geronimo Stilton books

I can only think of Pippi Longstocking and the Moomins for now, both well known here, but well worth reading!

MotherOfCatBoy · 24/04/2024 21:28

oh and Astérix of course…

Findus and Peterson - can't remember the author!

German grandad so these may be a little dated:

The never-ending story by Michael Ende
Emil and the detectives by Erich Kastner

Thank you! Lots of names I’ve never heard of to look up.

We are already big fans of the Moomins and Pippi Longstocking/Lotta but I couldn’t think of anything else except Babar, Asterix or Tintin - and fairytales, of course! DS is bilingual and reads Geronimo Stilton and some Italian authors with DH.
