My DS is 5 1/2 (year 1). We are enjoying reading together and looking for some inspiration. He has enjoyed George's Marvellous Medicine, The Twits and Up the Faraway Tree so far. Please share your recommendations!

I'll look up Dirty Bertie. Just William is a good one! We have Flat Stanley.

As well as the three you mention, DS of the same age has recently enjoyed:
Dick King Smith (Sheep Pig, the Hodgeheg, Water Horse)
jill Tomlinson (Owl who was afraid of the dark etc)
Winnie the Pooh
Pippi Longstocking and Lotta makes a mess

He loves the Dahl ones best but I’m trying to spread them out a bit.

4 kids here, we absolutely loved Jez Alborough's "fix it duck" (and similar in the series, Duck in a Truck etc.). It is perfect for a 5 year old, so easy to read with them, it tells the adventures of an accident prone duck and his friends (mainly goat, sheep and frog) in a rhyming way, so that the child often shouts out what is going to happen as you turn the page. Easy language, funny storyline, nothing pretentious, woke, or makes you think too much, and very easy to read as a parent.

DS is 5 1/2 and is obsessed with the famous five at the moment, he was so excited for the second BBC special at Easter, we're working our way through the books and he has some for his yoto player too. A bit old fashioned in places but I found the language in Ronald Dahl more challenging in places (especially Charlie and the great glass elevator his descriptions of people from other countries 🫣)

DS also thinks the giraffe, the pelly and me is hilarious

At that age mine loved Alex T Smith... Claude books and Mr Penguin series9. Notvsure if he has more series now.

The Enormous Crocodile is a horrid greedy grumptious brute who loves to guzzle up little boys and girls. But the other animals have had enough of his cunning tricks, so they scheme to get the better of this foul fiend, once and for all!

This picture book edition has a beautiful full-color interior and large trim to feature Quentin Blake's iconic art.
