Anyone in their 60s remember this? Eskimo girl taken to hospital in sled under the stars....

Talk about a shot in the dark! My dad was a teacher and had access to all kinds of books when I was a kid in the 1960s. My favourite was a story about a little Eskimo girl who broke a limb or something and had to be transported to hospital overnight. The journey was by sled, over ice, under the stars, and she was wrapped up all snug to stay warm.

Is it just me?!??! Does anyone else remember this enchanting story? I'd love to know what it was!

It sounds magical - I had a search around but could only find books from the 70's and 80's that match some of the information - not the broken leg or limb though. I would be interested to know what this book is too.

Julie of the Wolves?

Oh! I got so excited looking this up, thank you so much for your suggestion. Unfortunately I think the book I'm looking for is at least 10 years older...

Also, just to say, "Julie of the Wolves" sounds much deeper. Not much happened in the book I [half]-remember... broke her leg (???), sledge to hospital, stars and furry throws, that's about it really! It wasn't making a point about anything (unless I missed it!), it was just a sweet little inconsequential story.

Now someone's going to post that it was one of Chekhov's greatest works, and I will feel like a twat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG I really think it might be!!!

I can't find anything else online about that book... but the cover rings bells. In fact, I feel like crying just looking at it. I'm certain this is the book. Thank you so much 💗

My dad used to bring these books home for me (he was a teacher). He died last year, in his 90s.

How did you find it?

I'm so grateful!

I hope it's the one you remember @Dibilnik. I just googled 60's children's fiction Eskimo using images and that one appeared underneath an image I clicked on!

@JaneJeffer So, the search continues...!

The book turned up today and weirdly, I do remember it... but it's not the same one I'm looking for!

How strange is that?! Were Eskimo stories popular in the 1960s, or something?!

Never mind - for the price of a bottle of wine, I have had great fun revisiting this particular story. IMOK The Little Eskimo is about a little boy who goes out hunting, but fails to shoot anything, and every time he misses with his arrow the animal target befriends him. It's very Disney-sweet, I can see why I enjoyed it so much (e.g. playing with a bear - every adult's fantasy, never mind a child's!).

Just as he's about to return home empty-handed, he finds a dead whale and drags that back, becoming the toast of the village.

I'm happy to have rediscovered this book, so thank you for suggesting it 🥰
