Six dinner Sid - anyone else think it's sinister?

DS got this book home from nursery. It's about a cat that feigns loyalty to six different owners to get lots of nosh. Not a bad plot but I found it a bit odd for because

  • the second page had the moggy sitting in that classic position of licking it's gonads
  • further on there are six different sketches of it being scratched by each of it's owners, one showing it being scratched in the gonads again
  • and finally it has six different names, one being Satan and his owner when he is called Satan is clearly a spooky looking dude with goatee beard, weirdy eyebrows, the lot!

Obviously DS (3) isn't bothered by this at all but I thought it was a tad sinister for any kids book. Like it's some weirdo having a laugh

I think you might be taking this a tad seriously. I remember Six Dinner Sid from dd's nursery; she loved it. I don't remember pix of Sid's gonads at all, though I do remember one owner called him Satan.

Cats don't feign loyalty, they simply go where the food, warmth and tickles are. Sid got his come-uppance by having six doses of medicine anyway if I remember rightly!

I think you're overthinking this, VG. All three of mine have loved Six Dinner Sid.

Six doses of medicine

Does he overdose in the end then? That IS sinister

I know I sound like a basket case and I'm not that bothered. I love cats it's not the storyline that's the issue, more the underlying tones.

I love Six Dinner Sid and so do my kids! A ripping good read but I havc often thought that the illustrations are a little weird. Still love it though!

foxinsocks · 18/03/2008 20:54

that's what cats do innit. They lie around licking their nether regions.

BBBee · 18/03/2008 20:57

my cat is doing it right now - sinister bugger!

foxinsocks · 18/03/2008 20:59

maybe he has crotch rot. Poor sid.

or perhaps he's getting more than his dinner at each house and has picked up something naaaaaaasty

I love it-so do all the children I have read it to! I can't see anything sinister aboutit-very cat like behaviour!
