Good comprehensive nursery rhyme book for a 1-year old

Hello,

I am looking for a really good, comprehensive nursery rhyme book to give to a 1 year old, does anyone have any recommendations? It has been a long time since I've bought such a book for a child, my daughter being over 40, but I think it is a lovely thing to teach to children.

Thanks in advance

As a Reception teacher I agree it's so important for children to learn nursery rhymes (and sadly most only seem to know a handful of obvious ones these days before starting school). A good quality nursery rhyme treasury is one of my favourite things to gift to toddlers.

There are some great collections out there. It depends what you want really (size of collection, illustrations, modern or classic etc):-

Here are some of my favourites:-

Rock-a-bye Rumpus by Julia Donaldson - a mixture of classic and modern rhymes (some are Julia Donaldson's own poems but it has all the old classics too). Decent size, comes with a CD too, lovely illustrations, ordered by age with the most simple lullabies at the front and playground clapping rhymes near the back.

Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes by Axel Sheffler - the rhymes are all traditional with lovely illustrations, told through a story.

Ladybird Favourite Nursery Rhymes - the biggest collection of the 3, but by nature the heaviest. Lovely pictures, rhymes sorted into categories. Mostly traditional.

Thanks so much for the wonderful suggestions. I bought the Ladybird Favourite Nursery Rhymes book, as it seemed very comprehensive and with all the classics included. The toddler's mum was delighted as she has been trying to find a good nursery rhyme book for a while
