Recommendations for New Independent Reader

Hi everyone,

My DC has just turned 6 and has started trying independent reading.

They are currently halfway through RWI grey at school.

They've been trying the Frankie's Magic Football set and getting on well, bar a few trickier words.

Are there other books that are worth looking at? Doesn't have to be football related but preferably nothing too monster/scary as they struggle with that.

Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree and Wishing Chair books are aimed at that age group, either to read or to be read to.

(With the original illustrations, if you can get them.)

We got an Early Reader set - brilliant range of stories which they normally wouldn't choose pitched at just the right level as they still like colourful pictures

I second Rabbit and Bear and Claude as great series for this age, although Rabbit and Bear does have some quite complex language so might be more of an investment which he'll enjoy you reading too him now and enjoy rereading himself in a year or two when he's more confident and fluent.

Horrid Henry and Dirty Bertie are both aimed at new readers of that age.

Dragonsitter
Oliver Moon
Billy and the Mini Monsters (not scary)
Flat Stanley
Wiggleton Primary
Shifty Mcgifty and Slippery Sam (mainly a picture book series but they have a few longer books too aimed at new readers).
Hubble Bubble Granny Trouble (as above, both picture books and chapter books in this series).

Dick King Smith, Jacqueline Wilson, Jeremy Strong and Julia Donaldson have also each written some great early reader chapter books too.

Sorry that should say Wigglesbottom Primary
