Reccomendations for 10yr old DS

I'm after reccomendatiosn for my 10yr old DS. He's football, gaming and chess mad so any fiction along those themes is always a hit. He seems to quote like historical stuff. Books he's recently loved are -

Kick by Mitch Johnson
Checkmates by Stewart Foster
Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo

I'd like to get him a few good reads for Christmas, any suggestions?

Was just going to recommend The Academy, mentioned upthread.

My 10yr old DS just recently enjoyed Animalcolm by David Baddiel. He has a gaming/Christmas themed book out too, Virtually Christmas. So might be good.
