Dd7 is a good reader but will only read when prompted or has to for school etc. I remember I loved reading for pleasure at her age but I can't really remember what I read.... Does anyone have Dcs of a similar age who have loved any particular books? She isnt a girly girl so doesn't have to be books typically aimed at girls. Thanks

Jacqueline Wilson
Holly Webb
David Walliams
Roald Dahl

All perfect for 7+. Michael Morpurgo and Emma Carroll are great too but maybe for when she's a bit older? (9+) What about the Harry Potter series? The 13 Story Treehouse series are also great for that age. Enid Blyton Magic Faraway Tree?

Non-fiction might interest her more if she's not an avid reader though. Some children just aren't that in to fiction. Is there a particular subject which fascinates her?

My almost 7 year old currently loves David Walliams. The Faraway Tree books and Isadora Moon are also a firm favourite

DS2 (7) is currently reading (all at once, to my inner horror):

  • Secret Seven
  • Little House in the Big Woods
  • Toto the Ninja Cat

Previous recent successes have included:

  • Noddy
  • Horrid Henry (I am not a fan but he brought them back from school and does enjoy them so…)

The Worst Witch

DS's favourite was the warrior cats series at that age. Seven is not too old for many picture books too, and they have much richer language than a lot of chapter books for younger readers, your library may have an older picture book section.

The boy who grew dragons series
The Worst Witch series
100 mile an hour dog series
Stardust Magic by Moonlight series
My Secret Unicorn series
Horrid Henry (maybe too easy?)
Faraway tree or wishing chair
Some Jacqueline wilson (but some would be too mature/upsetting for a 7 year old), I'd go for Sleepovers, Cliffhanger, Buried Alive, The Mum Minder

Slightly more challenging:
Roald Dahl: George's marvellous medicine, Esio Trot, Fantastic Mr Fox, Charlie and the chocolate factory, Matilda, The BFG
Molly Moon 1 and 2
Harry Potter 1 and 2
