Can anyone help me remember this book?

When I was a little girl I read a book about a little tabby cat who lived in a little fishing port who fell asleep in a basket and accidentally sailed across the Channel. Can't remember which way though.

I also remember that the cat enjoyed being stroked the wrong way, against the lie of her fur.

I read it when I was about 7-ish I think and that was early 90's.

I'd love to get this book for my children.

Not a tabby cat but was it the Mousehole Cat?

It was Jill Tomlinson, the cat that wanted to go home!

This is it! Yes!

Thank you. Such a lovely little book and I hope my children like it too.

Oh my goodness - I had totally forgotten about this book but I loved it!! Didn't she learn to mew in French? I might have to see if I can find a copy now for nostalgia's sake.

Ahh Jill Tomlinson wrote The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark as well, classic!

My DD loves this book.
‘you do have a funny little meow’
‘and she did miss Gaby stroking her the wrong way’
I’ve read this so many times, it’s lovely.

Thank you for this thread @DanceWithYourBalloon ! For two reasons, one being that lovely box set I can now add to my daughter's Christmas list and second, I did not realise The Works had a website and next day delivery / click and collect.
Fab 😄

It’s such a lovely series. I read them to my 5 yr old last year.
