Hi,
My just turned 9 year old is really interested in history and they are doing WW2 this year. Are there any good books anyone can recommend for him?
He's a good reader. I've done a quick google but wanted to ask for personal recommendations. Thankyou!

In the Mouth of the Wolf by Michael Morpurgo is excellent.
There's also a really good film called Zoo, abiut the rescue and hiding of an elephant from Belfast Zoo during WW2.
Both based on true stories.

'Dawn of Fear' by Susan Cooper.

Soverytiredtoday · 12/09/2023 20:45

Terry Deary -(of Horrible Histories fame)An Unlikely Spy
This is another one my boy liked at age 9

Personally we found Goodnight Mr Tom quite harrowing in certain places at age 9.

Saving Hanno by miriam halahmy. Perfect for that age. Introduces kindertransportbut very accessible, not too harrowing.
After the war and Resist by Tom palmer as well as those already mentioned.
Digging for Victory and I, Spy, a Bletchley Park mystery and newer titles I've heard great things about.

If you’re looking for something a bit shorter The Lion and the Unicorn by Shirley Hughes is great . Picture book format but quite a bit of text and a great story.

Also Tail End Charlie by Mick Manning and Birgitta Grandstrom is a graphic novel depicting what it was like to be a rear gunner in the RAF.

The Silver Sword is another great one, although he may be a tad young for it at 9. I think I read it in the summer of Year 6, so 11 and just about to go up to senior school, but I remember it feel quite a 'grown up book' at the time. It's stayed with me though, so definitely a recommended read at some point even if not quite yet.

We did the Silver Sword in Primary back in the 70s

Highly recommend the three books by Phil Earle who is writing currently.Award winning, highly respected, his books are set in WW2 and involve animals as well as children and centre on actual and lesser known events.”When the Sky Falls” “until the road ends” “ while the storm rages”
Also recommend novels by Lesley Parr “The Valley of Lost secrets” set in Wales and similar to Carries War

@Meduse they look very interesting - just looked them up and seem to have great reviews.

In addition to the above:
The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall.
Peter in Peril by Helen Bate. It's a graphic novel.

the machine gunners is one of my favourite childhood books and my children have all loved it too. Faff off always makes me laugh!
i wish there was a dvd of the tv series or even better a remake!

HarrietSchulenberg · 18/10/2023 20:18
