Any book recommendations for science mad DC?

My DS has recently told me all his books are 'boring'. What do you read to your DC at this age and any recommendations? He's too old for Julia Donaldson type books but isn't interested in Roal Dahl. Anything he watches on TV or general activities are all science based - he loves finding out about the world and how things work. He loves the usborne science books but we'd like something fiction to read together at bedtime. Preferably a chapter book that still has some pictures in it. Any suggestions?

My DS - 9 (but a strong reader if that makes a difference) is currently working his way though horrible science and murderous maths - two series along side the more famous horrible histories!

Sorry I should've mentioned age - he's 5, nearly 6. Thanks for the recommendations so far, I'll have a look.

Usborne "How Things Work" - not exactly a chapter book but you could take an object a day.

How about the Adam Kay books?
If not science based then the storey treehouse series are good and have pictures.

He might be a bit on the young side, but as a kid I loved the Uncle Albert books. I think there are 3 in the series.

Miles Kelley has some good books that are really informative and you can pick up and put down

They look good but are there illustrations throughout? The stories look great

It does have illustrations but I can't remember how many.

Clefable · 10/08/2023 23:44

I think it's prob one to remember in a couple of years! I've bought them twice now for boys who have been avid non-fiction readers who don't usually read fiction and both times they've been a real hit, but they were nearer 8-10.

Mine is Science mad. I read to him every night until aged 11. He really loved me reading the whole of the how to train your dragon books- I think we started approx age 6

obladeeobladah · 10/08/2023 23:52

There are some pictures but not loads -
Cressida Cowell draws very well

Chasetherainblownfearsaway · 10/08/2023 23:53

Leonora Bolt is about an inventor, my science-mad daughter loved it.
The Rainbow Grey series is also great and vaguely scientific (weather-related).
He might also like the Tiny Science series by Anna Claybourne.

BrokenMantra · 12/08/2023 10:36

At that age my science mad child liked the Astrousaurs books (about dinosaur astronauts) as well as animal type things like Paddington and Olga de Polga.

Some children prefer fact books and as long as they enjoy books what does it mater.
