My 7.5 month old loves books - Any recommendations??

There aren't that many suitable ones in bookshops - i.e. ones he chew but not rip!

Ones he loves at the moment are one of the baby touch ones and we have 3 of the 'that's not my...' ones (of course!). He also likes one with baby faces and 'tickle tickle'

It really calms him down for bedtime and I'd love some more suggestions

'Peepo' and 'The Baby's Catalogue' by Janet and Allan Ahlberg are delightful, available as board books, and work (on different levels) for years.

From a very early age DS loved a series of rhyming cloth books called My Cow Book, My Dog Book, etc. - there are others too. They have flaps, activities, noises etc and are very funny. They are still in one piece after lots of use and he still loves them at 2.5.

the very hungry caterpillar, there was an old woman who swallowed a fly - both available as board books on amazon.

also, have you discovered The Book People? Really cheap sets of picture books (10 for £10) which are proper high-street quality. So even if they get damaged you won;t be too upset.

There is a series by Helen Oxenbury - they are called things like Playing, Dressing etc that all mine loved from babyhood right up to age three or four. Actually any board book by her is good.

going on a bear hunt is a favourite in our house

when you get your bookstart bag at 8 month check there will be some board books in there.

basically we just had lots of different sized board books for ds right from the start and now at 19 months he proudly picks his own books out and presents them to you for reading again and again and again..... we have lots and lots of books though.

also as someone mentioned the old lady who swallowed a fly - there is a range called classic books with holes and these are great for little fingers!

Peek-a-Boo is wonderful. It is a board book with sturdy flaps. We still have ds1's copy and he is 8!

In addition to the other excellent suggestions Sandra Boynton Moo Baaa La La La and The Bedtime Book were faves at that age for DS. Also 'HUG' Jez Alborough 'Farmer Duck' and 'a squash and a squeeze' Julia Donaldson Axel Scheffer -basically anything with babies and or animals seemed to be a winner and a simple or rhyming text helped too as did mummy making animal noises. Then came the obsession with fire engines and diggers now it is rockets space and dinosaurs-sigh-it goes so quickly (sniff)

Oh and all available as board books but you may have more luck finding the board book edition with Amazon unless you have a specialist children's bookshop near you. Our library has a really good board book selection too.

The Jez Alborough 'Where's my Teddy?', 'It's the Bear' and 'My friend bear' have all been HUGE favourites with my dds from about 9months on. Unfortunately, not board books so now held together with more sellotape than paper. We did also have one of his Duck In a Truck books, which dcs did like but dh got very very bored with (overheard one evening 'Say hello to Mr Duck, where's he going in his truck? I don't really give a.......monkey's).

My little guy has loved Hairy Maclary and Slinky Malinki books since he was 4-5 months and still does. Both by Lynley Dodd.
Also adores Dear Zoo, anything by Julia Donaldson - although these were a little long for him at 9 months but good now at 12 months. He adores Aliens Love Underpants, Rumble in the Jungle, Commotion in the Ocean, Cock a Doodle Doo Farmyard Hullabaloo and Dinosaurs Galore.
We bought him one of the Duck books - Catch the Ball Duck - he was indifferent for the first 2-3 reads but now regularly chooses it to be read. Another Jez Alborough he loves is "Dogs DOn't Fly"

Incidentally, although he plays with the books all the time, he doesn't rip them or chew them. The only ones he chews are the board books and he could eat a whole one in an afternoon given the chance! Pop-ups can't hendle the rough treatment, but the others are all bearing up OK.

Usbourne books - especially the touchy feely ones like "That's not my Puppy" etc.
