Hi all, just wondering about any recommendations for my dd 16. For reference, she has read and enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club series, Claire Keegan, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Holly Jackson, Agatha Christie and Donal Ryan. She has been really struggling on what to read lately

TIA

You could suggest she checks out some influencers on TikTok (booktok) as they’re really up on what’s good and what’s coming up over the next year etc.

My DD for example focuses on a wide selection but makes most of her booktok videos about fantasy/YA fiction I would say. She and her followers all love chatting about their current reads, fave reads, movies/merchandise/clothing styles of the books etc.
She gets quite a few bits of ad work from lots of publishers and book related companies, which she loves. She does tons of book reviews too and does regular ‘live chats’ on TikTok about books.

I can PM you her TikTok name if you think your DD might like to see the kind of books.

If she enjoys detective fiction with a touch of fantasy then try the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. Great fun, novels and graphic novels set between the main books.

Or try Ellie Griffiths Ruth Galloway novels. Detective fiction with archaeology, easy reading and a good page turner.

Blood to Poison by Mary Watson is perfect.

@ChocolateConnoisseur I wasn’t meaning to sound like I was promoting DD’s TikTok channel! 😂
I was purely explaining that some young people get really into the whole ‘booktok/TikTok’ community for ideas of books to read next.

@Verbena17 its fine! That would be very helpful if you could do that. Thank you!

Have you been to the local library and asked for their advice?

Coyoacan · 25/02/2023 21:08

Have you thought of Crime and Punishment. It is hard to get used to everyone having half a dozen names, but otherwise it is brilliant

If she liked Agatha Christie, perhaps some of the other Golden Age of crime novels? I love the ones by Ngaio Marsh, and there’s lots of others - Dorothy Sayers are more complicated, so depends what she liked about Christie, the era or the style, perhaps

Have a look at these guys. It’s a website that recommends quality books for children from zero to 20:
