Help me identify this book about a mischievous monster?

This is driving us mad. We read it in school in the 80's - paperback, landscape, beautifully illustrated. There was some sort of monster (possibly with a big red nose?) that used to cause chaos around the house and the little boy would get into trouble for it as his mum didn't believe him. There was possibly a scene where the monster steals food from the fridge, and maybe one where he is playing with leaves in the garden? We've searched and searched, and I don't think we're making it up as me and my OH went to different schools in different parts of the UK and both have distinct memories of this.
Anyone?...

Not Now, Bernard?

pollyhemlock · 13/02/2023 18:33

Yes, sounds like Not Now Bernard to me too. Such a traumatic ending!

PriamFarrl · 13/02/2023 18:34

Yep. I was about to say Not Now Bernard too.

GuyFawkesDay · 13/02/2023 18:36

Yep, Not now, Bernard.

Monster eats Bernard in the end!

I read the description and thought Not now Bernard! So it looks like a clean sweep😀😀

Yep, sounds like Not Now, Bernard by David McKee.

He is a purple monster though - no red nose?

Thanks everyone - we have conferred and agreed that it isn't "Not Now Bernard". I'm going to Waterstones on the weekend to check out the book section to see if I can find it (although it sounds like it's going to be pretty obscure by now so not holding out much hope)

I would also suggest Little Monster Did It, by Helen Cooper, but I think that may be after your time frame.
