World book day - Wednesday Addams?

RenegadeMasterx · 12/02/2023 20:26

Hey, my little one is obsessed with Wednesday Addams, she loves (snippets) of her new series and I know they've done a small book on her, but would it be acceptable to send her as Wednesday for world book day at school? She's 6. Thanks

@RubaiyatOfAnyone what a fantastic charity shop find.

Wonderpoo · 12/02/2023 21:22

@Rogue1001MNer I just find it sad that you’re in the staff room judging little kids for dressing up as something that makes them happy. ‘It’s not a book’ so their parents must be thick/ they don’t own a book etc etc. just seems a nasty attitude for someone that looks after/ teaches children for a living

Wonderpoo · 12/02/2023 21:23

@RubaiyatOfAnyone those are beautiful!

Rogue1001MNer · 12/02/2023 21:23

Beautiful pictures @RubaiyatOfAnyone

scoutcat · 12/02/2023 21:32

@Rogue1001MNer Not in any staff room I've been in!

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 12/02/2023 21:33

Thank you 😁
and my last post should have said “derail”, duh.
Last one.

*Trust me, you are judged if you don't dress as a book character

No one cares, nothing bad will happen, but it I'd noticed.

Every staff room comments on who ISN'T a book character*

Bollocks. I've been teaching for over twenty years. I've never once heard anyone who works in a school commenting on how children dress for World Book Day. Or any dress up day.

Judged my arse.

savoycabbage · 12/02/2023 21:40

How absolutely ridiculous.

Elliania · 12/02/2023 21:41

I'd say Wednesday Addams is a multimedia character but not necessarily a book character. The Addams Family started as a comic in the 1930s and since then have been in movies, TV shows, comic books, movies & even a musical. But I don't think there have been any novels based on the Addams Family so it might be a tenuous link for WBD. Has she seen Coraline? The aesthetic is very similar and that was a book first.

(PS Wednesday on Netflix has a 12 age rating in the UK.)

Sounds a lovely place where you work.

"Have you seen Sam?? He's charging around dressed as Chase from Paw Patrol, who tf does he think he is?" 😂

Oblomov23 · 12/02/2023 21:52

It's fine, really. Can't believe people are quibbling.

Rogue1001MNer · 12/02/2023 22:42

You're all completely right, and I'm totally wrong.

No staff room on the country judges you. Why on earth would I say they do when they don't

As you were

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

margegunderson · 12/02/2023 22:51

The Addams family were created in cartoons and I have one of the collections. It's perfectly legit. My (much older) kids were Wednesday for many Hallowe'ens

Fenty1 · 14/02/2023 10:30

Just saw this thread and wanted to say that my daughter age 8 will also be going to Book Day as Wednesday Addams. I doubted it myself for a while then discovered it began as a comic book so we are definitely going ahead with it!

Popplcroft · 14/02/2023 15:28

@Rogue1001MNer I think rather than accusing of lying people are saying your school doesn’t sound a very nice one and has not very nice staff within it. They’re little kids and the last thing they need is the people they look up to and trust judging them.

SammieA09 · 22/02/2023 09:03

My daughter is going as Wednesday Addams and she is 7 she’s never watched it much but she likes her and that what she wants to go as so 👍🏻🤣

GreenWheat · 22/02/2023 09:11

Some people on here are ridiculous. Of course it is fine to go as Wednesday Adams, who is as multi media character. The whole "film is a whatever rating" is a bit silly - little kids have been dressing up as Spiderman for years, despite the films being 12A and the video games being 16. They can engage with the character without watching the film.

That heavens my kids don’t go to a school with a nasty, judgemental twat of a teacher like you. I live in a high poverty area, and the school always stresses that it’s fine to come in in whatever you have at home, even just your own clothes if you don’t want to dress up. Most of the girls are in princess dresses and the boys in superhero costumes or football kits. Attendance dips in schools on these days when children refuse to go in because they’re ashamed they don’t have anything to wear.
Op definitely do Wednesday! I’m sure she’ll look and feel amazing :)

RenegadeMasterx · 22/02/2023 12:07

Thanks guys. She's defo going as Wednesday, I also noticed a LOT of the children watch Harry Potter which I think (especially the later ones) are pretty frightening, so I don't think they could snub at Wednesday. She's so excited 😆 x

Just thought I'd add to the controversy in this thread - my six your old SON will also be going as Wednesday Addams this WBD! My mum has made him an amazing costume from one her tops (that he's wearing as a dress) a crotchet hat with wool plats and a 'Thing' made from a stuffed surgical glove 😊

Paramedicchrisbooks · 28/02/2023 09:48

I would personally say not the best one to take in for World book day due to the age restriction on it.

toomuchlaundry · 28/02/2023 09:53

World Book Day seems to have lost its purpose, if to know more about the character you watch a film rather than read a book with the character in it

Needmorelego · 28/02/2023 10:05

@Paramedicchrisbooks that's just one version of the character that has an 'age restriction'.
The original comics, 60s TV show, 90s movies, book adaptions etc are perfectly fine.
The fact that the concept is "dress as your favourite book character" is basically making the day about fictional characters and the fictional world they exist in - which for many characters can evolve over time into different genres (comics, TV, films, books, Lego figures....).
It's like non fiction books are completely ignored by World Book Day when ironically for many younger children their favourite book is actually a non fiction one.
I did volunteer reading at a primary school. The books that caused the most excitement among many (especially boys) were ones like those DK Eyewitness books, Usborne Look Inside, Guiness Book of Records etc.
If the dress up theme is about characters rather than actually books then there is always going to be children dressed up in characters that cross genres.
