DD age 10 (year 5) is a massive reader, loves a series but open to ideas. Things she has enjoyed over the last couple of years:

Murder Most Unladylike Series
Harry Potter
Scarlett and Ivy
Ruby Redfort
Morrigan Crow
She dips in and out of David Walliams but these are fillers really as read them all a while ago

Things she didn't like much:
Percy Jackson - she didn't like these at all
Alex Rider

A series of unfortunate events

If any one has any recommendations we would be grateful

How about the Joan Aiken Wolves of Willoughby Chase series? Personally I (and DC) were not overly enamoured with the first one but loved them once Dido arrives in Black Hearts in Battersea.
Katherine Rundell
Eva Ibbotson
The Chrestomanci series, plus Howls Moving Castle and sequels
Noel Streatfeild?

Anewuser · 29/01/2023 19:49

Anything by Michael Morpurgo, children in my year 5 love them.

meetmeatmidnights · 29/01/2023 19:51

Maybe Skulduggery Pleasant depending how mature she is?

PotKettel · 29/01/2023 19:59

Have you tried Diana Wynne Jones? My dd loved the Chrestomanci series. Good fit for a Morrigan Crow fan.

My also devoured Malory Towers at this age, having missed it earlier on. I picked up a box set cheap on one of the 2nd hand bookshop websites.

My dd also loved the Podkin One Ear series, it really captured her imagination. And the “Varjak Paw” series.

And if you like animal adventures you can snap up the Warrior Cats books - easy reads, and I doubt you’d want to read all 52 (!) but as they are very cheap online second hand it’s tempting for a voracious reader.

Joan Aiken’s “The Wolves of Willoughby Chase” is also a must-read. If your dd gets on with it, there are loads in the Wolves Chronicles sequence.

The Little House on the Prairie series.

Needmorelego · 29/01/2023 20:02

Hetty Feather series by Jacqueline Wilson.

Starcircle · 29/01/2023 20:39

At her age I loved Michelle Magorian books - Goodnight Mr Tom we did as a class reader in year 5. Her other books you might want to skim over as they maybe suitable more for tween age. Also loved all the Little House on the Prairie books!

Amari and the night brothers is a good read. There is a sequel to that too.

stressbucket1 · 29/01/2023 20:42

Ben Miller books
And Lisa Thompson books could be worth a look too

Smartiepants79 · 29/01/2023 20:42

My 10 year old loves the warrior cat series.
Redwall
Inkheart
The house with chicken legs and the girl who speaks bear.

HellonHeels · 29/01/2023 20:44

Susan Cooper is fab. She might be a little young?

BlueChampagne · 30/01/2023 13:05

Anne of Green Gables
Swallows and Amazons
The Secret Garden, A Little Princess
101 Dalmatians
The Hobbit

Second Katherine Rundell and Michael Morpurgo

Beamur · 30/01/2023 13:14

Mysterious Benedict Society series.
Polar Bear Explores Club (my DD's favourite)
The other books by Lemony Snicket might be worth a look at too.
Narnia series still has a lot of charm

Spudina · 30/01/2023 13:16

There’s a trilogy that brings with A Darkness of Dragons. My DD1 is the same age and they are her favourite books.

Beamur · 30/01/2023 13:20

If she likes dragons, she might like Wings of Fire series and How to Train your dragon. (Audiobook for this is the best - David Tennant reading)

ChessieFL · 30/01/2023 13:22

The Lottie Brooks series by Katie Kirby

Mrsbadger77 · 30/01/2023 13:28

Mine loves Morigan Crowe and the series of books that all seem to involve crimes on trains she is engrossed in kidnap on the California comet atm and before that assassin on the arctic express. Didnt put it down all day yesterday. Author MG Leonard and Sam Sedgman

madamehooch · 01/02/2023 05:58

Skandar and the Unicorn Thief

SunnySomer · 01/02/2023 06:20

The Murderer’s Ape by Jakob Wegelius is excellent- she needs to persevere with chapter 1 as there’s a whole concept she needs to get her head around - then it’s fabulous. Letter for the King by Tonke Dragt.

Yuja · 01/02/2023 06:32

Thanks everyone some great ideas
