Hi,
Does anyone have recommendations for books for my just turned 8 year old. She's in year 3, but always been an avid reader, but I'm finding the books that suit her reading ability are too mature for us.
She's currently on book band dark red which is age 9-11.
We have all the Roald Dahl, Jacqueline Wilson, Famous Five, Far-away Tree, Malory Towers, David Walliams etc etc.
Any hidden gems I'm missing that we can get her for Christmas. She's not interested in Harry Potter unfortunately.

The wizards of once books by cassandra Cowell. My 9 year old loved them.

I've just seen a Puffin's classics box set that looks good too!

Any book by Katherine Rundell - The Explorer, The Wolf Wilder, and Roof Toppers are particularly good and the writing is so much better than e.g. Jacqueline Wilson.

What about Arthur Ransome?

Violinist64 · 20/10/2022 19:44

How about The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Narnia series?

Ganymedemoon · 20/10/2022 19:46

My DSD is enjoying a children's version of Jane Austin classics in a series called "Awesome Austin". All the titles are same as the originals. Modern day, child appropriate versions of the classics. She is also super into Jacqueline Wilson for context.

UltimateIrritant · 01/11/2022 20:42

The Phantom Tollbooth
The Ramona series by Beverly Cleary
Five Children and It and the sequels - The Phoenix and the Carpet and The Story of the Amulet. Some of it is rather of its time, mind you.
The Swallows and Amazons series
The Family from One End Street
The Moomins books, starting with The Moomins and the Great Flood, followed by Finn Family Moomintroll
The Olga da Polga series (the plot devices get a bit repetitive, but it's fun)
Margaret Mahy's short story collections (some out of print now but it's quite easy to find editions). Absolutely masterful writer.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/05/2023 16:13

I loved and still love the Ramona Quimby books at that age.

Ah, zombie thread, resurrected by an ad, no less - never mind, I love sharing my recommendations and perhaps someone else will find them useful.
