We are going to UK next week (Yay!) and I would like to get some books for the DCs.

Until now, I have just browsed the bookstores and it is a bit hit and miss. I recently bought The Gruffallo and both DCs love it.

Can anyone recommed a good, well written book for these age groups?

Thanks

The Gruffalo's Child is good, as are most of Julia Donaldson's books. No Room on the Broom is pretty good.
Um, Where the Wild Things Are, Dirty Bertie books (dd's personal fave). Will have a think for some more

kindersurprise · 21/01/2008 22:33

Thanks. Will look for those.

You'll find it anyway if you are looking at Julia D, but The Snail and the Whale is fab and very right-on and the kids love it; it is also nice to read aloud. A bit more grown-up than the Gruffalo.

We're going on a bear hunt is excellent.

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 22/01/2008 13:48

Helen Cooper's books - Pumpkin Soup and its sequels and Tatty Ratty are excellent.
A recently published picture book that my five-year-old loves is That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown by Cressida Cowell.
If you haven't got any of Shirley Hughes' Alfie books you must. If you do, there is a new one out called Alfie and the Big Boys so look out for it.

My two like all the Julia Donaldson ones (I love them too) and the Elmer books.

For the 6 year old dd - there has been a thread on good books for this age range...my dd likes the Clarice Bean picture books by Lauren child (and the charlie and lola ones) - she has also illustated a addition of pippi longstocking which is fab. Also for chapter books the magical childrne series by sally garnder are fab as are the horrid henry books. She has also loved the owl that was afraid of the dark and various ones of those series. Also Milly molly mandy and my naughty little sister have been good (but not so boy friendly).

Picture books wise the little red train books by Benedict Blathwayt are good...

Hairy McClary !!!
Harry the Dirty Dog
Each Peach Pear Plum
Goodnight Moon
Babette Cole does some good books, but maybe not for everyone ()

choosyfloosy · 22/01/2008 21:10

the Crazy Camelot Capers series are brilliant. Some are in print, some not, so Amazon might be the best option. They are just the Arthurian legends retold in verse, very funny, quite bloodthirsty! DS likes the one we've got and he is 4.

dd loves this

I have a 5yo DD. She likes:

The Princess and the Wizard (Julia Donaldson)
Worst Witch
My Naughty Little Sister
Magic Faraway Tree
Flat Stanley
Horrid Henry
Mr Twiddle stories (Enid Blyton I think)
Charlotte's Web
those Magic Fairy books

She has recently asked for Princess Mirrorbelle, again by Julia Donaldson and Pippa Longstocking.

A bit that we only have 2 books of all the great ones mentioned here. I must start buying books myself rather than leaving it up to Mum. She did buy George and the Dragon though, that was a big hit.

I will make a list for Granny too

Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon by Jules Bass and Debbie Harter, by Barefoot Books, theres also an internet site - fantastic colourful illustrations and good story for either sex, my 4 yr old DS loves it.

Try Captain Yellowbelly - The Tale Of The Terrible Pirate. My little boy thinks it's hilarious.
