So I really don't remember a lot just that it really stuck with me

Lilac cover - in hardback

Think it would of been released sometime between 2008-2012

About time travelling or alternate universe

Sorry that it's so vague. Complete long shot. But does anyone know the book?

Think the PP's suggestion is a bit off - that's a German book published in 1927 about a Russian soldier in WWI!

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead? It has a time travel theme, published 2009. Doesn’t seem to have a lilac cover though.
