Book about transatlantic crossing?

DS5 was telling me today that at school they were being read a book about a journey: an unorthodox transatlantic crossing involving an experimental vehicle.

DS5 said that they had also watched the film and the story begins with two old women and some smelly old fish.

I'm not sure what story this is. Does anyone know?
