Similar to The Book Thief

DD almost 15 struggles to find books she likes now. Recently read and enjoyed the Book Thief and I wondered if anyone could recommend anything similar? Google suggests The Kite Runner but having read a synopsis it sounds like there's an assault which may be a bit too graphic/ upsetting.

If she’s into books set in or after WW2 try The Empire of the Sun by JG Ballard or Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. Or for WW1 try Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain ( warning: it will make her cry). The Kite Runner is a great book, but it does feature a serious sexual assault. Obviously you know best if she will cope with this.
