A friends DD has expressed a wish to read more and, as an avid reader myself, I want to buy her some books (maybe a series) for her upcoming birthday.
She is 14 but a young 14 and loves animals, (especially dogs) but sadly struggles with friendship groups and being left out/behind.
I really appreciate any suggestions you may have as I stopped reading from around 11-18 (I discovered boys, make up etc) so pretty clueless.

“Dogsbody” by Diana Wynn Jones
“Wolf Brother” by Michelle Paver
“The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents” by Terry Pratchett (this is about a cat though, not a dog)

Children of this age tend to read up to YA or adult novels. They want a main character of at least 16 years old usually. Or perhaps some non-fiction?

Here are some ideas that might be worth looking up:

  • A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron
  • Marley and Me by Josh Grogan
  • The Call of the Wild by Jack London
  • Some of the Battersea books aimed at adults e.g. Christmas at Battersea, Nine Lives of Christmas, Lost and Found

Non-fiction

  • Heroic Animals by Clare Balding
  • Animal Matters by Charlotte Rea
  • Supervet books by Noel Fitzpatrick

You could perhaps get her a book voucher (National Book Tokens) if you don't know her likes in terms of general fiction.

My youngest son really loved Michael Morpurgo books I know they're classed as 11 to 14 so maybe bit young but you could find the ones most suitable for 14 year olds .He went on to do English at uni - I'm sure the MM books gave him a good start ! Hope you find what floats her reading boat as it were !

Perhaps more fantasy than you were thinking, but i loved the Tamora Pierce “Wolf Speaker” series as a young teenager (and then graduated onto the Anne MacCaffrey Dragonrider series).

It really depends whether she would prefer to read 'up' or 'down'. 14 is an in between age where some girls want to be reading about boys/relationships etc, but others might be happier reading books traditionally in the middle grade age range.
If you think the latter, have a look at Lauren St John books - she's a great writer. She might enjoy Kat Wolfe Investigates series. Kat's Mum is a vet and there are quite a few animals in the stories. They would be a cosy rather than challenging read - depends what you're after.
