What is the most lovely book that anyone's read to give to a 3 year old?

First Snow or anything by Kim Lewis.
The illustrations are totally beautiful, and the words are often hauntingly lovely.
The Last train is almost a ghost story, but my dc loved it and read it over and over again.

Imagine by Norman Messinger.

I love a couple of books illustrated by Jim Fields, with amazing landscape drawings, and also nice stories. They are 'The Squirrels who Squabbled' and 'The Way Home for Wolf', both written by Rachel Bright.

If you have a vehicle mad toddler, 'Old MacDonald Things that Go' by Jane Clarke is great, good illustrations with lots to talk about even if, like me, you really aren't that interested in the vehicles themselves.

Julia Donaldson’s Counting Creatures is beautifully produced and my 3 yr old is very keen.

I am LOVING this list. Many of these books are available to see being read on YouTube and I can't get enough of listening to them. Spoilt for choice! Thanks!

The Bedtime Collection by Wendy Cooling. My boys loved this book as there was something for everyone! A book to keep and pass on.

Heruka · 06/11/2021 22:16

Gorilla by Anthony Browne - the illustrations are amazing and we have it in giant form, the book is 3 times the size of a normal book.

Great thread, thank you OP. Adding stuff to my toddler’s wish list.

Our favourites are Peepo and a pop up book about London.

The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane is a stunningly beautiful book - maybe a bit much for a toddler, but a gorgeous present for future years.

Lost and found by Oliver jeffers

It makes me cry as reminds me of my lost little one, but I also love it as it’s just so lovely and the illustrations really touch my heart there’s something about them I can’t explain it but I love them ❤️

covetingthepreciousthings · 08/11/2021 17:28

Oliver Jeffers books are beautiful, but especially Here We Are which is dedicated to his first born child. It's my go to new baby gift now, but I think it works just as well reading it to toddlers.

We loved The Little Penguin by Patrick Benson, about an adelie penguin and her friend William, the whale, and they are both 3 years old. DD was desperate to be 3!
