The most beautiful book for a toddler?

What is the most lovely book that anyone's read to give to a 3 year old?

Anything by Robert Sabuda. I'm planning to give The Little Mermaid to my 3yo niece for Christmas. They are delicate though as they are pop up books so maybe not suited to a more rough and tumble type toddler!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/11/2021 14:56

Story wise or aesthetically?

One if the most beautiful stories we had was 'Goodnight to all the Sleepy Animals'.

NuffSaidSam · 06/11/2021 14:56

I really like the Shirley Hughes books, but more for pre-school age than toddlers maybe, they're slightly longer picture books.

Sammilouwho · 06/11/2021 14:56

What will you dream of tonight by Frances Stickley, we love it here!

NuffSaidSam · 06/11/2021 14:57

There is a Shirley Hughes collection that features a range of stories and poems from toddler up to teenager which is lovely and a gift I've given before.

At the end of his first year of nursery, DS was gifted a book called “My Pet Star” by his teacher, and it brought tears to my eyes. It’s short enough to keep a toddler’s attention, and has lovely pictures Smile

The Jolly Postman - with all the envelopes!

DaftVader42 · 06/11/2021 15:03

I still love “the snail and the whale”

Each Peach Pear Plum. Beautiful pictures and lovely rhymes.

Either - just looking for something really special that's a bit out of the ordinary!

Thanks - off to look these all up

I second The Jolly Postman.

We've got a beautiful book called the fox and the star. If it's a Christmas gift, there's a new one out this year by Julia Donaldson about the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree and the illustrations are really beautiful. Or a lovely hardback copy of a classic, maybe Winnie the Pooh or similar. We have a lovely copy of that. I'm really keen on beautiful books!

I really feel that it's partly about quantity. When my daughter was little we were skint. I bought her library discards at 10p each. (We were also library members.) We bought books from charity shops and jumble sales. Children will decide their own favourites.

I am so glad that she grew up to be a keen reader and we still discuss books together.

I LOVE Robert Sabuda books! I have a while collection I bought for (me) the kids. So much detail has gone into the pop ups - I think they are a real collectors item.
DeathMetalMum · 06/11/2021 15:34

One of my favourites is Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson.

Panda368 · 06/11/2021 15:36

The fox and the star

SBlonde · 06/11/2021 15:40

The story orchestra book. We have swan lake but there are other stories

ShoesEverywhere · 06/11/2021 15:41

Under the love umbrella. I cry every time!

I second Robert Sabuda - specifically The Night Before Christmas

Still get our copy out at Christmas my DDs favourite - and they’re 18 and 19 now!
Also a favourite - not The Jolly Postman but the seasonal version - The Jolly Christmas Postman.

Helen cooper books
Mine loved pumpkin soup and the baby that wouldn't go to bed

I bought my friends’ 2yo this for his baptism, a personalised nursery rhyme collection. It has personalised rhymes with his name in them plus the old classics alongside. They really like it.
