I've read a few posts referring to this wonderful book that I loved as a child. Having wchecked it out on Amazon I've learned that the new copies you can buy are from the 70s edition. This was editted from the well-known 1966 edition and lacks a lot of the characters, plot details, homour of the 1966 edition which is out of print. Have tracked down one vintage 1966 edition only - great condiiton but costs £75! Can I look on it as an investment?!
Or am i mad not to let my dd1 make do with the bowdlerised 1970s version.

The Puffin books 1966 version was reprinted in 1970 and 1972 and IS the correct version with Nosi Parka included. I know - I still have my copy! I suspect the 1966 one is a first edition and you may pick up a slightly tatty 1970 or 1972 one for a lot less - it looks like a 1970 is available on Amazon for £1.50.

I recognise the title but have no recollection of the story tbh. Although iirc Kenneth Williams read it on 'Jackanory'.

Sorry, not being much help am I?

This was such a wonderful book. It was revised post 1966 because it was not politically correct. However, the original version was different from the 1966 version with a totally different ending and was illustrated by the author.

I have a friend who is a book dealer, and he got me the original. I want to try and get hold of a 1966 version though - because they were paperback, the two copies I have had have dropped to bits.
