DS8 loved the Mysterious Benedict Society series, Harry Potter, and series of unfortunate events.

Are there any similar books that he might enjoy that are similar?

He's read all the Dahl books, David Walliams, Wimpy Kid, etc but he likes funny books too.

Any recommendations very appreciated!

DS1 is the same age and likes the same kinds of books. He has enjoyed:
David Baddiel books
Letter for the King
The Alex Rider books
Murder most unladylike series
Hound of the baskervilles
Who let the gods out
Fortunately the milk
Chronicles of ancient darkness books
Chronicles of Narnia

I also think he will like the Tiffany Aching books by Terry pratchett, got to get those for him next.

As said above - How to train your dragon or the 'Wizards of Once' series by the same author might be a good fit.
