DS has been reluctant reader, but did really like (and re-read) Cressida Cowell (HTTYD) and Wizards of Once.
Enjoyed most David Walliams.
Tends to listen to old favourites as audiobooks.
We then struggled a bit for new books until he found Rick O’Riordan - he has devoured all of these series.
He has tried and doesn’t like Alex Rider and Artemis Fowl.

Any suggestions, especially for more historical fiction?

Thanks

Land of Stories by Chris Colfer was good for ours at that age

FixItUpChappie · 15/03/2021 04:01

My 10 yr old is loving the Hardy Boys books at the moment. Circa 1950s - does that count as historical? Wink

Doona · 15/03/2021 04:02

CHERUB series
Charlie Bone

The inkheart series is usually a hit.
The Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini.
The Bartimaeus Sequence by Jonathan Stroud
Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell

Edge Chronicles
A Wizard of Earthsea

Teawithnosugar · 15/03/2021 15:14

My son nearly 13, has enjoyed The Ranger's Apprentice book series, also Brotherband series by the same author. He is currently making his way through The Unwanteds books. He couldn't get into Alex Rider either.

The Hobbit remains his most favourite book oh and The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books!

Jujus · 16/04/2021 17:17

Try
Life of Llywelyn: tales of boyhood by A.L Richards [on Amazon].
It's amusing, historical and has a sociological edge which may well appeal to his discriminating attitude.

Kanaloa · 16/04/2021 17:19

Maybe a bit obvious but the early Harry Potter books? He’s the same age as Harry in the first book as well!

Kanaloa · 16/04/2021 17:19

Also Darren Shan series are quite good. Can’t think of any historical type ones though.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/04/2021 17:24

Michelle Paver's Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. DS2 was obsessed with those books at around that age.

PhilODox · 16/04/2021 17:36

Skulduggery Pleasant
Mortal Engines series
The Chronicles of Prydain
Chris D'Lacey's dragon series

mamaduckbone · 16/04/2021 18:29

My 11yo ds loves anything by Ross Welford - the 10000 year old boy hits the historical button as well.

TroubleUsedToBeMyBusiness · 19/04/2021 20:01

Magisterium series by Holly Black / Cassandra Clare

ASimpleLobsterHat · 19/04/2021 20:06

I’d second the cogheart books and who let the gods out. DS11 has also enjoyed Podkin One Ear and the subsequent books - not historical per se, but fantasy about battling rabbits (it’s better than it sounds!).

PhiloDox · 20/04/2021 10:41

He could also have battling mice with the Redwall books by Brian Jacques.

The Stoneheart trilogy by Charlie Fletcher is good too. (and fits with historical)

Sarahvn · 23/04/2021 09:22

Stone heart by Charlie Fletcher. Second what someone already suggested Bartimeus trilogy by Johnathan Stroud (the audiobook is fantasticly narrated too) also Lockwood and co. Also by Johnathan Stroud.

My son has read everything by Rick Riordan & loved them. He's also loved the series below:

Who Let The Gods Out - Maz Evans
Pegasus - Kate O'Hearn
Valkyrie - Kate O'Hearn
Shadow of a Dragon - Kate O'Hearn
Inheritance Series - Christopher Paolini
The Last Dragon Chronicles - Chris D'Lacy

I've got Hunger Games, Divergent & Maze Runner lined up for him next & I've kept back all my old Dan Brown books (Davinci Code etc).

EwwSprouts · 25/04/2021 21:57

Young Samauri series
The Roman Mysteries
Biggles Learns to Fly etc
