Hello! My DC who's almost 4 has started to be ready to enjoy longer books with chapters - we read a Road Dahl but had to change lots of the scary bits!!

Have thought of Dick King Smith but does anyone have other suggestions?

I can only think of ones I read as a child and libraries are still closed so more difficult to make new discoveries.

Thank you!

Millie-Mollie-Mandy and Naughty Little Sister were the ones that all of mine loved at that age. There was also a rather fun one called "Robert Goes to Playgroup". Little things like he breaks his arm and they do feet painting-lots of little short stories that were complete in themselves.

Magic faraway tree by enid blyton. We got them as 6 individual books with colour illustrations.

Claude and Shift Mcgifty are good ones too.

We also enjoyed Clever Polly and the stupid wolf. Not as many pictures but excellent short stories. Might be for a little bit older though. Think DS was 5 when we read Clever Polly.

The Notebook of Doom series. My son was 4 when he started on small chapter books and these were his absolutely favourite. They are great fun, and you can also get the companion notebook of doom monster book which is also fun for them. It's great.

The Geronimo Stilton series. He is a mouse detective and they're fantastic for kids that age.

The Frogsell series by C.J. Busby. It uses the character from Arthurian legend as well as some original characters. Magical and a lovely introduction to the fantasy genre.

Dick King Smith is wonderful! Michael Bond is also lovely (Olga Da Polga, Paddington Bear).

DD loves the Dirty Bertie stories.

Hilary McKay's Tilly series (2 books?) and her Charlie series.

The Tilly books are for younger children and much shorter than the Charlie books.
