Which books to read to DS5

I'm looking for ideas for new books to read to DS (just 5) i.e.proper books with short chapters or book of short stories (one at bedtime each night). We've done Teddy Robinson (1950's and fantastic) to death, plus Percy The Park Keeper and Harry and His Bucketfull etc, etc.
Any suggestions welcome? Should add that we are not in the UK at present so DS is not yet being taught to read at Kindergarten, but just can't get enought of really good stories. I'm keen to encourage this as he will start school here at 6 and (by all accounts) will be reading by the end of the first term (that's not to say that being typical Brits we worry about it and do the odd bit at home).

DS2 (5)likes Dirty Bertie (Worms, Pants) and also Flat Stanley (remember him?). Also Moomins, but they aren't to everyone's taste! Some of the Dick King Smith ones went down well too, but too early in the morning to remember titles. He like listening in when I read his big brother Cressida Cowell's Hiccup Horrendous books ('How to be a Dragon etc.). Hope that's a help.

Ds 5 likes The Pirate School stories by Jeremy Strong.
Also Horrid Henry...great bedtime stories and we usually take it in turns reading a page.

Try Allan Ahlberg's Gaskitt family books (The Woman Who Won Things, The Man Who wore all His Clothes, The cat Who Got Carried Away and the Children Who Smelled a Rat). They are all very funny and fast-paced with lots of illustrations so a good bridge from picture books to grown-up chapter books. My dcs also liked Flat Stanley at this age. And The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith. Enid Blyton's Magic Faraway tree is another good one for this age.

Have you tried the Faraway series? Very old fashioned but great fun,nice short chapters. Or the Odd and Elsewhere stories,lots of good adventures!!

Thanks TrickorTripletEm and KM1. Suggestions look good and so much easier for me as I can't just go and browse in an English language bookshop (well there's one but it's a bit limited).
