here.

I don't think it makes a difference, but I can't understand why it would be relevant to teh story

OP posts:

I don't give a flip whether Dumbledore is gay or straight, because I am so disappointed at how fifth-rate the last 3 or 4 books in the HP series were.

BUT, I did want to say: if nothing is said in the whole opus that entails him being either gay or straight then surely his sexuality is indeterminate. She can not make him gay just by thinking him gay. If it's not in the book then we are all as entitled as she is to determine his sexuality.

LazyLinePUMPKINJane · 20/10/2007 18:48

I think it's too late for her to make announcements like this. The series is over. Finished. Unless she is planning on writing any more all of a sudden, IMO, the characters are done with. What she has published is official and the end.

Seems a bit random to say such things about characters like they are real people.....

To add: I think that Dumbledore's sexuality was completely irrelevant to the HP plot.

ThreadyKrueger · 20/10/2007 18:52

She just can't do grown-up feelings, beliefs, attitudes, so the idea of her actually having anything to say on the matter is daft. Her characters' inner life doesn't get much beyond 'Harry gave his schoolbag an angry kick. 'Oh I am so angry,' he said, angrily.'

I always love the bit in the POA where Remus and Harry are talking outside on that tower thing, when everyone's gone into town in the snow...I think thhe intimcy and Remus's reserve though he feels so close to Harry is very touching. Not so much a gay thing as that wonderful teacher-pupil bond and reverence you sometimes get

A bit off topic, sorry.

FlightAttendant · 20/10/2007 19:37

I don't know, skerry - I'm a bit new to HP in general, a late convert shall we say! And btw I do love everything about Lupin, he rocks

ProfessorGrammaticus · 20/10/2007 19:38

Because Harry had to battle on alone, in the tradition of all great heroes

DumbledoresGirl · 20/10/2007 20:13

AitchTwoOh, I don't think it would make Dumbledore a paedophile if there was a bit of a frisson between him and Harry. Harry was 16 by the time I was thinking of.....

Anyway, I agree that if he is not shown as gay in the books, then he is not anything. JKR can imagine what she likes and so can we if the books don't tell us otherwise. DG clings to her relationship with the great Dumbledore!!!

He did face Voldemort alone though didn't he? You know, I really don't remember hardly a detail of the last book Apart from the slushy last chapter.

fawkeoff · 20/10/2007 20:29

IMO and correct me if you think i am wrong but.........
harrys parents died when he was a baby, and didnt know what happened to them until hagrid told him in the philosophers stone.he never really experienced the loss of a loved one because he was just a baby.sirius was the nearest thing to a loving parent that he had ever known, and was hopeful that he would live a happy upbringing with him once he had cleared his name, so sitius had to die in order for harry to really feel the impact of grief in order to overthrow voldermort.
sorry if i am way off line but that is my theory

mistypeaks · 20/10/2007 20:41

In agreement fawkeoff. Sirius had to die so he would feel the grief as did dumbledore. He had to be unprotected, alone and angry as hell with his two 'guardians' 'heroes' and the unanswerable truths about them. How else was he to grow up enough to face what he had to?

fawkeoff · 20/10/2007 20:41

yes DG he facced tom marvolo riddle he was sooooo pissed when he spoke to him in his muggle name

mistypeaks · 20/10/2007 20:42

oh and no I don't care who's gay or not gay. (Apart from Harry m'cus he just had to marry Ginny)

fawkeoff · 20/10/2007 20:46

i know this is really sad but when i think of when harry goes to face

fawkeoff · 20/10/2007 20:48

i really like the boyband

fawkeoff · 20/10/2007 20:48

omg sorry i am such a div head just ignore me

southeastastra · 20/10/2007 20:49

he was obviously gay from the start, he wore eyeliner for gawd's sake

persephonesnape · 20/10/2007 20:53

sKerrysmum ( and anyone else for that matter) do you think we see DD as asexual because he is very very very old?

I do think that the potter serise works for grown ups because the whole thing is asexual - we only start to think about sex when harry starts to think about cho/ginny in that way and when hermione is whirling canaries because Ron is going out with lavender. so it is a nice thing or grown ups to re-experience - the strange thing though is that you accept that there is sexual tension/frisson between some of the adults if you are totally immersed in the world, because it's then more like the real world. narcissa and snape for one.. bella and Voldemort...

i always thought Remus would be gay, because that would be a double tragedy on top of the werewolfery. ( I mean tragedy in the sense of the time in which he was a teenager, not in the sense that it's a horrible thing to be )

please note: no allusion to any of Sirius' girlfriends throughout the books... (ducks!)

DumbledoresGirl · 20/10/2007 20:54

What are you lot on??

DumbledoresGirl · 20/10/2007 20:56

Personally, I think Snape only thought he was in love with Lily because he was desperately in denial about his own sexuality.

fawkeoff · 20/10/2007 20:58

i dont think his age has anything to do with it.unlike harry/ginny and ron/hermione how i was routing for them to be together and their love stories were very much a part of the books, dumbledore was nothing but a hero/wonderful fella in my eyes.i didnt care who he was in love with because j.k never brought it to the fans attention until now

mistypeaks · 20/10/2007 21:17

Professor McGonnagal (god Blossom hill is a killer to spelling!!) always seemed to flirt with Dumbledore and he did ignore it in a gentlemanly way, but no more so than if he just didn't fancy her regardless of orientation. I think he is non sexual because he is (was) a gent rather than old. Neville Longbottom was the same, he wasn't old - just unassuming and 'nice' never thought of him one way or the other.

fawkeoff · 20/10/2007 21:19

i wanted neville and luna to get it on, i thought they would have been fab together
