Book for 13 year old learning English

I know you lot will be able to help me out! Our 13 year old goddaughter is learning English as her second foreign language at school. She's resisting mainly because she finds the books they've been given to read very boring.

I sent this photo and her mum reckons she should understand it - it's from the Usborne Young Reading Series 2.

Any suggestions of easy to read books, with not too complicated vocab or language, that might appeal to a 13 year old?

She is absolutely not interested in anything to do with fashion or love. At the moment she wants to be a librarian or work in a bookshop.

These books are older content with easier reading as aimed at helping those with dyslexia. Not too long, good layout but not patronising the reader.
