Would you be upset if your child read or heard the phrase 'Hush silly' from a kiddie's picture book? Age group 3-6 year olds. Would it have a negative effect on a child? I would really appreciate a response. 'Hush, silly'

Am I missing something? Depending on the context it could sound quite endearing, for example at bedtime and baby mouse is squeaking a funny tune “hush now my silly little love, it’s time to sleep, sweet dreams” etc.

Blerg · 30/10/2020 19:53

Wouldn’t even notice that.

purpleme12 · 30/10/2020 19:56

Erm no why would I be upset by hush silly?
Do you really think this is a bad word?

zaphodbeeble · 30/10/2020 19:57

Eh ?????

SavoyCabbage · 30/10/2020 19:59

No I wouldn't but if I were writing a children's book now I wouldn't write it. If a child called another child at school silly they would be told not to. Your can behave in a silly way but you wouldn't call a child silly.,

Absolutely nothing wrong with that!
Do you object to the word silly or the word hush? (I’m assuming it’s calling someone silly that’s offending you?)

RaininSummer · 30/10/2020 20:00

Sounds fine to me . Way better than 'shut the F up'.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 30/10/2020 20:00

While I was, and actually still am, careful about the words I say to DS, I absolutely would not even register this. Books are books. Words in books tell you about character. Hush, silly tells me something as does shut up, stupid. I would never have said the second but equally wouldn't have blinked if he'd read that either.

JuliaJohnston · 30/10/2020 20:01

Christ almighty Hmm

Lougle · 30/10/2020 20:02

No.

Thank you everybody for taking the time to respond. I should add that I do not think such words are liable to cause any harm at all to a child, of any age. I have a disagreement with the illustrator of my story. I am of the opinion that although the illustrator's opinion is as valid as anyone else's, it is very much a minority opinion. Responses here seem to back me up. Again, thank you all.
