Arthur Ransom Swallows and Amazons?

minniemoll · 30/07/2020 22:24

Could be The Secret Island by Enid Blyton. Was there a cow involved?

Chocolatecake12 · 30/07/2020 22:25

I was going to say swallows and Amazon’s too!
Or a famous five or secret seven Enid blyton book

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 30/07/2020 22:25

The Secret Island. I was telling DS about that book the other day.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 30/07/2020 22:25

They don't run away in Swallows and Amazons.

Doilooklikeatourist · 30/07/2020 22:26

Lord of the flies ?
The boys we're stranded though , didn't run off

Regulus · 30/07/2020 22:26

It's the secret island by Enid Blyton. Did they make a summer home by building a house in the trees, did they make a winter home in the caves. Did Jack go across to the mainland and get a cow and make it swim back to shore.

AdaColeman · 30/07/2020 22:26

Something by Enid Blyton? There’s an Enid Blyton thread running ATM, full of enthusiasts, they are sure to know!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 30/07/2020 22:26

The secret island.
Jack. Nora. Peggy and someone?
I re-read it last week.
They take chickens and a cow called Daisy

The secret island by Enid Blyton. I read that book over and over when I was younger :) x

Regulus · 30/07/2020 22:27

Oh I love it when in the time it takes me to type a reply people say the same.

Five go to Kirrin Island? They make beds out of heather/lavender and sleep in a cove accessed by a hole in the roof? Then of course they discover some ruffians up to no good.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 30/07/2020 22:31

@HoneysuckIejasmine

It was Five Run Away Together. Absolutely my favourite FF story, I read it so many times.

I love the bit where they go to the bakery before dawn to buy bread for the trip, then eat the warm crust in the boat.

Parkandride · 30/07/2020 22:33

Secret island! I loved that book, they ran away as they thought their parents had died but they did return at the end I think.

Some day trippers went to the island for a picnic and heard the cow but thought it was thunder

Scarydinosaurs · 30/07/2020 22:34

Ran off or ran away?

Liadan · 30/07/2020 22:35

Definitely The Secret Island. I loved that book as a child. I spied it in Waterstones last week and was thinking it might be a nice one to read to my girls.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 30/07/2020 22:38

The Secret Island was my absolute favourite as a child. Jack, Mike, Peggy and Nora are the children. They have a cow and hide in caves and have adventures.

There are books that follow on from it but we had to stop reading them: I can explain the sexism but not the open racism in the other books

wilde85 · 30/07/2020 22:39

I can't believe I'm reading this! I have always wondered what it was called i read it I don't recall finishing the book... it's annoyed me for years.

heidbuttsupper · 30/07/2020 22:40

The Secret lsland. It's my favourite childhood book

Mike that's it! It was bugging me because I only read it last week Grin Just couldn't be bothered to go and find the book and look it up! Its such a shame that the books have dated badly in the sense they are sexist and racist. Because they are wonderful stories.
Lucygucy · 30/07/2020 22:43

Oh I was thinking about this series earlier, the books about the forest and the one with the eclipse. I couldn't remember anything else about them so thank you!

WinterAndRoughWeather · 30/07/2020 22:57

The one with the Eclipse is The Secret Mountain, where they go on an adventure with their parents (are they archaeologists or something?) and a foreign prince they befriended.

I loved it, but I expect it’s super racist.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/07/2020 23:02

The Secret Island is one of my favourites! I've read it at least once a year since I was about 7, and am now quite a few decades older than 7. I love the descriptions of all of their meals, and then weaving baskets to sell berries. It's a lovely hug of a book.

Overrunwithlego · 30/07/2020 23:03

Five go to Kirrin Island? It was the first of the famous five books I think.

In the secret island it says that they make money from their flying. They also say they've given it up but fly off to Africa in later books.
