Historical novels for 12yo DS

DS isn’t an advanced reader, and prefers books that have shortish chapters and large-ish text.

He is massively into history (especially Henry VIII, but pretty much all British history) and has just finished the horrible histories books (I know that many children read these as 8 or so year olds).

Can anyone recommend historical novels that he would enjoy?

I got one of my DCs 3 books by Ann Turnbull when they were about 8, which they loved (and still re-read at 11!). THey were" Plague: a Cross on the Door", "Great fire: a City in Flames" and "The Gunpowder Plot". Suspect I got them from the Book People as a set, who've unfortunately gone into administration, but you can get them on Amazon.

Cue for Treason
The Daughter of Time
Little House books
Also ones like Biggles were written in contemporary, but now are historical.

Thank you. He has only read one of these (Friend or Foe) so there is lots for me to look into here.

The Order of the White Boar series by Alex Marchant. My DS loved them. Set during the reign of King Richard III.

Have you looked at the ‘Tudor Terror’ books by Terry Deary?
This article about children’s historical fiction is worth reading - lots of ideas.

Would Treasure Island and Kidnapped by RLS be about the right level, OP?

Good luck.
