Is The Colour Purple suitable for 13 YO DD?

Watched the movie decades ago but can't remember
Other book recommendations on the subject would be much appreciated. DD LOVED The Help. Very advanced reader, intelligent and socially aware girl. Thanks so much.

I would think it depends on the child - there is rape and domestic abuse and violence.

Personally I think the abuse/rape storyline is a bit much for that age to handle. Obv every 13 year old is different, but I wouldn't have recommended it to my DD at that age.

I have just read it and although it is a fabulous book it is not one I would recommend to a 13 year old

The abuse is described from page 1 so if you're unsure read the first few pages and see what you think yourself

I read it in school at about 14. It’s a brilliant book, but as PP said perhaps read a bit first yourself to decide.
