Ds9 has read all of hers and especially liked The Wolf Wilder and Rooftoppers.

Any recommendations for similar please?

Try Sophie Anderson, Emma Carroll, Kiran Millwood Hargrave.

Lovely. I've downloaded samples from all of these authors for him to try. My mum has very kindly offered to buy any and all he likes the look of.

Have to say he’s got very good taste. Wolf Wilder and Rooftoppers are two of the best I’ve read in recent years.

Pascha · 21/04/2020 20:42

What he really likes is a straight, rollicking adventure story with a touch of peril and a good mystery. He has no truck with anything that tries too hard to be silly or stupid or is full of fart jokes (though he does like The Beano).

He likes to get lost in the story.

Abi Elphinstone is excellent and Amy Wilson.

Think he would love Rumblestar

TubereuseNordlys · 03/05/2020 17:34

Nicola Penfold - Where the World Turns Wild. It's even more appropriate given our current circumstances ( eco-warriors released a new disease to save the wild)! I like it because it's full of hope and determination.

Pascha · 04/05/2020 19:19

Thanks - I've downloaded samples of both books mentioned.

My 10 year old loves Wolf Wilder and thinks Sarah Driver's 'Huntress' series is fabulous too. Magic and adventure in a nordic other world.
I'd also recommend 'Nevermoor' by Jessica Townsend.

He might like Letter for the King. A special book and a great favourite in our house.

DS11 loved The Explorer.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 14/05/2020 22:54

Try Brightstorm. I forget the author but it is excellent.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 14/05/2020 22:55

Also, perhaps, The Last Wild by Piers Torday and Sky Song by another writer whose name I have forgotten.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 14/05/2020 22:56

And Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver

In case you come back to this thread...

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart.

DD read this around the same time as Rooftoppers and the Wolf Wilder and really enjoyed it.

Pascha · 15/05/2020 16:17

So many new ideas! Thanks everyone, he'll try them all.

Another vote for Letter to the King, by Tonke Dragt.
And for the Brighrstorm series.

schmalex · 11/06/2020 18:56

The Cogheart series by Peter Bunzl is great.
Sky Pirates: Echo Quickthorn and the Great Beyond.
The Girl Who Stole an Elephant.
All Abi Elphinstone's books, as previously mentioned.
The Land of Roar.

schmalex · 11/06/2020 18:56

Oh, also Wonderscape by Jennifer Bell looks good, although I haven't read it yet.

MoThePro · 08/11/2024 19:45

Percy Jackson and any Rick Riordan book is an absolute blast.
My favourite book of all time is Wonderscape and the whole series.

Katherine Rundell is a quality writer. Ella Risbridger’s ‘The Secret Detectives’ has a slightly similar style.
