Books for a child who loves all Dav Pilkey and The Bad Guys Series

Really stuck for new books for DS 7, he has read all of Dav Pilkeys books- loved Dog Man in particular, then we found The Bad Guys Series which he flew through and laughed constantly at. Looking for something similar- graphic novel/comic book style books with plenty of humour- can anyone help?
We’ve tried the Storey Treehouse, wimpy kid, more recently Barry Loser, The Bolds- but he has not fell in love with any of them the same way.

Caveboy Dave?

FoxInABox · 07/04/2020 01:42

Thank you! I will give that a try

Hilo - I can nearly guarantee a Dog Man fan will love it.

Less funny but with more adventure-
Zita spacegirl
Mighty Jack
Amulet

Thank you I have ordered Hilo and saved the others in my basket to try next. Hilo looks right up his street!

Hope he likes it Smile

Has he looked at the Phoenix comic book ones? Phoenix Colossal Comics Collection books are a great mix But also mega Robo bros & particularly Bunny v.s monkey are loved by my Dog man fans (I can stand it though!)

FoxInABox · 08/04/2020 00:28

No we hadn’t heard of those, thank you for the suggestions! I’ve been struggling to find anything similar and Waterstones couldn’t suggest much (pre lockdown).
Hilo is coming tomorrow so I will let you know how he gets on, sure he will love it.

I'm about to try Calvin and Hobbes with 8yo ds who adores Dogman and Captain Underpants. I'll be gutted if he doesn't love them.

FoxInABox · 08/04/2020 23:48

@Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons it’s a success! He only has a few pages left, he has read almost the whole first book today, so I have ordered the next two for him.
Thanks @MotherForkinShirtBalls I will have a look at those, I haven’t heard of them. Try The Bad Guys series, I can’t shout about it enough as my DS has absolutely loved them!

I know this is an older collection, but have a look at Paul Jennings.

SummerLightning · 09/04/2020 03:27

You can't go wrong with a subscription to the Beano and the phoenix!

Mine used to love dog man and bad guys (slightly grown out of them now) he also loves big Nate, Garfield and asterix.

JoeySpecial · 09/04/2020 04:16

Life of Norm.

By 7 & 9 boys love the "Hot dog", "weirdo" and "ninja kid" series by Anh Do. Apparently new series "wolf girl" is great too

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 09/04/2020 12:13

Oh that’s excellent FoxInABox

This made me laugh - my DH still thinks Hilo is great GrinConfusedGrin

Big Nate is a hit here too

Stinkbomb & Ketchup series? Not esp challenging a read, but hilarious, and great illustrations by Tazzyman. Also, William Sutcliffe's 'Circus of Thieves' series.

SummerLightning · 11/04/2020 05:15

@Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons hehe I quite enjoyed mighty jack mentioned above! Also partial to squid bits and no country (sadly missed) from the phoenix.

FoxInABox · 11/04/2020 06:35

Thank you so much for the suggestions I will have a look at them all on Amazon today, I think I will have a very happy boy Smile

Not quite the same but my ds loves dog man, bad guys etc. He also loves Horrid Henry if you havent tried that.

I generally struggle with comic books (I am a speed reader so comic books feel infuriatingly slow to me & I don’t like slapstick!) but Mighty Jack/Zita and Amulet are excellent

QueenVictoria11 · 13/04/2020 18:28

My ds loved those too. Harold and Pigsticks is fun but quite simple. Tintin definitely worth a look - Lake of Sharks and Tintin in Tibet are good to begin with.

AngryPrincess · 21/04/2020 18:29

Mr Gum series and Slime Squad series. Also astrosaurs series by Steve cole too basically started my DS reading. (only bought first ine because it was 10 p in the charity shop).

FoxInABox · 21/04/2020 23:22

Thank you I have just ordered Tintin and Slime Squad, they both look like books he will love. Currently still waiting for Hiro books 4 & 5 to be delivered too as he has really enjoyed them.

@MrsCaplan is stinkbomb & ketchup comic style? Looks like something he would like but have googled and can’t seem to find out if it’s comic style or not

OP posts:
howcomes · 25/05/2020 23:36

Try Tom Gates series too by Liz Pichon

MrsCaplan · 26/05/2020 09:44

Sorry FoxInABox, not technically a comic, but Tazzyman's plentiful illustrations seem to override that concern for my DC!

FoxInABox · 26/05/2020 10:58

Thank you @MrsCaplan I think he might like them!
@howcomes thanks we have those already as my eldest DD loved them, will give those a go too Smile
