Spooky/scary book recommendations

Hi everyone!

I have an 8 year old boy that loves horror/spooky books and I'm looking for some recommendations for him. He's read the goosebumps books and really loved them. He's reading at a greater depth according to school although I'm not sure if that means he can read older books or if it's something else.

Thanks!

Coraline is a good one, it’s fairly different to the film and pretty creepy in places. It is harder than goosebumps though but may still be fine for an 8 year old that is reading at a higher level 😊

Groosham Grange
Count Karlstein
Embassy of the Dead
Skulduggery Pleasant
Spooks
A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Glass Children

Books for older children tend to include 'older' themes and content, so you might want to vet them yourself first. Often classics are better.

Roman Mysteries

I came on to say Skulduggery Pleasant but someone beat me to it. I know the series does get darker in later books but the first few are very good and my 8 year old loves them

Room 13 by Robert Swindells.
There's an anthology called iirc "The Shadow Cage" but that might be a bit much for an 8 year old, the title story in particular still creeps me out now!
Humblepuppy is a lovely ghost story, I think it's by Joan Aiken. She did some other good spooky stories for children too.

So many people suggesting Skullduggery Pleasant :)
Darren Shan has two book series that fit well with the theme you are looking for.
Cirque du freak (Vampires Assistant) , and The Demonata series. I think there are about 10 books in each series but they are great. I lent them to my little sister(9) and she loves them.
