who love horse riding and gymnastics. Just seen Clare Balding has written some horsey books but not sure if they are for slightly older readers?? Can't remember what my DD's were reading at that age but suspect it was Malory Towers or St Clares ? TIA

Can only think of the old Ruby Ferguson, Monica Edwards and Pullein-Thompson ones!

Clare Balding’s books are perfect for 8yos. Pippa Funnell has also written a lot of horsey books for this age.
Others to look out for:
Seaview Stables Adventures
A Pony Called Secret
Pony Club Rivals
Pony Club Secrets
There’s a gymnastics trilogy by Cate Shearwater that would be age appropriate, and there’s another gymnastics series called Gym Stars.

Thank you both. Lots of ideas there. !!

There's also a series called My Secret Unicorn - can't remember the author. Not horsey/gym based but I think DD found the Daisy series by Kes Grey very funny around that age.

I loved and still love the stamina Quimby books at that age.

This site has some great books for eight year olds. There's a mix of classics and newer titles.

Clare balding ones are great. There's a series about Katy and an exmoor foal which my dd loves

Callmecordelia · 22/12/2019 07:55

K M Peyton - Fly by Night. There are others in the same series, and it could lead in to Pennington when she's a bit older.

YY to the Ramona Quimby books by Beverly Cleary. I had to get them from Amazon for DD, UK bookshops don’t seem to carry them. I have no idea why they are not more popular, because they are perfect for that age.

Hello

There's a book called 'The Wolf and the Goats' on Amazon. The story has a great message and is not your usual wolf loses against the weak.

The story teaches the importance of team work and togetherness.

Hope you like it as much as I did.

This book is a lovely choice, it reminds me of Wind in the Willows and books of old. Lots of detailed hand painted illustrations. Its really lovely. My children just love it, and it’s become a tradition for reading in the autumn and Halloween.
