I would take her to your local library and let her choose whatever takes her fancy. Her school won't be expecting her to be able to read, and just loving stories is absolutely fine.
Try her on the Julia Donaldson books, Happy Families by Allan Ahlberg, Fairytale Hairdresser series, Hairy MacLary books, Dr Seuss etc.

Lighthouse Keeper books
Katie Morag
Tales of Brambly Hedge
Books by Oliver Jeffers
Blue Kangaroo books
Melrose and Croc books
Alfie and Annie Rose
Topsy and Tim
Princess Scallywag

Hi,

Try 'The Little Cockroach'. It's a rhyming story, Julia Donaldson stylie. It's a travel adventure that teaches children about other cultures, travel, determination & friendship.

I was going to suggest Julia Donaldson too. Classics!

Ha ha!! I wasn't suggesting Julia Donaldson... she has totally taken over the picture book market. I was suggesting something a bit different with a lovely meaning but with a similar style:
