Hunger games are great for 13 year olds, my mates daughter who is also 13 is currently reading them now and loves them!

Not a series as such, but Eva Ibbotson’s books might hit the mark too...

Sherlock Holmes? You could start with short stories like Silver Blaze.
Agatha Christie too.

Something by Cornelia Funke? Or Mallory Blackman?

Or what about the Nancy Drew series?
