Trying to remember the name of a series, might be called Wolf spirit, by Michelle Pavier I think. I thought they were about native Americans but they are about ancient Britain when there were bears and wolves about. The author has really thought about what life would be like with the earth as the only resource. Lots about tribal life and hunting but with respect for nature.

I've just introduced my 12 year old DS to Douglas Adams, he also likes Terry Pratchett. He is a fan of books that make him laugh. Recently we both enjoyed Wonder by R J Palacio.

My 12-year-old son is currently loving the Mortal Engines series, and has also recently devoured the Cherub books. Also loves My Family and Other Animals.
