DS 11 - What to read next?

DS has aspergers and has only just gotten into reading fiction so I am trying to encourage that as much as possible! He started with the Inkheart Trilogy and has just finished the Hunger Games books. He is worried nothing will beat the Hunger Games books which is said are the best ever. He read a couple of Alex Rider books and didn't love them. Harry Potter is out as he saw all the films last year so doesn't see the point in reading them. Is Lord of the Rings a bit much for an 11 year old? Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

  • Philip Pullman
  • Young James Bond books by Charlie Higson
  • any of Anthony Horowitz's children's books

Lord of the Rings is a good idea but might be a bit soon. Do you think he might like Sherlock Holmes?

I slogged through LotR at the age of 10/11 but enjoyed it way more when I was a little older.

Has he read Mortal Engines?

Hi skullduggery pleasent is a great series of books, both my dd (11) and dh (38) loved them. It's full of magic, battles and comedy. My ds (10) loves captain underpants and goosebumps

My DS(10) also has Aspergers. He read The Hobbit and enjoyed it much more than LOTR. Also the Beast Quest series and How to Train Your Dragon books. Also Michael Murpurgo. He read Harry Potter after watching the films after I told him that the book is always better than the film and he enjoyed comparing how the films are different from the books.

Artemis Fowl series

Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan (there are sooooo many of them but they are good!)
Shape shifter series by Ali Sparkes

Both went down really well here with DS11.
Just started the Philip Pullman books which he’s also enjoying.

My ds 12 says the mortal engines books are the best he’s ever read (after loving Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and similar)
The maze runner series is in a similar vein to The Hunger Games so he may enjoy those and I’ve also heard good things about Gregor the Overlander, also by Suzanne Collins, although ds hasn’t read those.

The cherubs series, much better than a,ex rider. Similar premise but much, much better.

I have a set I have used with every year 6 class I I have taught. They are always well read with a waiting list for each book!

The Across the Nightingale Floor series by Lian Hearn is brilliant. As is the Eragon series by Christopher Paolini. The Divergent trilogy is also quite good if he's enjoyed The Hunger Games.

(If they can imagine an era when everyone didn't have cell phones) I just found this in a charity shop, Wolf by Gillian Cross. Highly recommend. On a similar theme, Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones is one of my all time faves.
